Elgg

According to http://elgg.org/about.php "Elgg is an open source software platform designed to allow people to easily connect and share resources. Established in March 2004 by Ben Werdmuller and David Tosh, Elgg allows you to create a social network and host it on your own infrastructure, modifying the features to fit your specific needs." One can start one's own custom-made, online interconnected data exchange.

Elgg networks are taking off around the globe. They can be found in private schools, universities and for social networking. The above site offers several links to tell more about Elgg and help people start new ones.

I think Elgg is pretty interesting. It seems that the concept is still fairly new. To be able to run an entire network with an open source program is awesome! Can't wait to learn more.

Hi Stacy,
Just visted the Elgg site and discovered that it is much like a live journal. What is interesting is that a user can log on and add or remove friends or share or not share information. The posting system is fairly easy too so I signed up and my ELGG account is http://eduspaces.net.

I think we could also use this for our classes since it is more of reporting style.

Margie, I believe you're right. Elgg is fairly new...but very interesting. Would you want to run your own network?

Good research, Gloria! You are a technorat! Do you know what you'd like to use your account for specifically?
